Battery storage developer and operator Spearmint Energy has brought its first major project online in the ERCOT, Texas market.

The company announced the start of commissioning on the 150MW/300MWh Revolution battery energy storage system (BESS) in June last year, its first major project which it acquired in June 2022, and has said the project is now online.

Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services were provided by Mortensen while inverter and BESS company Sungrow supplied the 134 BESS containers comprising the project as well as 45 power conversion system (PCS) units.

Spearmint said the project was brought online on schedule, on-budget and with zero accidents or injuries.

In October 2023, Spearmint secured US$92 million in tax equity financing for Revolution which it claimed was “one of the first” uses of the new investment tax credit (ITC) for standalone energy storage, brought in by the Inflation Reduction Act last year.

The Texas market, where ERCOT is the grid operator, is the most active in the US alongside California and is primarily where Spearmint Energy is building its projects. The firm is targeting a 2025 commissioning for a 900MW three-project portfolio acquired in early 2023, all in ERCOT. ERCOT has predicted that by October 2024 there will be 9.5GW of BESS online on its grid.

Projects are generally around the two-hour market, partially to deal with regulations around minimum state of charge but also as the market looks set to move towards more energy-intensive revenue sources as ancillary services begin to saturate, potentially in the next few months.

“We are proud to commence commercial operation at Revolution, our debut grid-scale storage project, to
reliably deliver energy throughout ERCOT whenever and wherever it is needed. The project’s completion
marks a major milestone for Spearmint as we cement our position as a leader in Texas’ fast-growing battery storage market,” said Andrew Waranch, founder and CEO of Spearmint Energy, who has previously written a guest blog for this site.

At the time of writing, Europe had had its most successful year in terms of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with a record 7.8GW of renewable energy contracts signed. As we gather in May 2024 for the third edition of the Renewable Energy Revenues Summit, the energy landscape continues to evolve rapidly, influenced by the beating drum of climate change, volatility around power prices and the need to decarbonise power procurement as well as generation.
